FiiO has introduced the FT15 as the successor to its FT5 open-back planar magnetic headphones, bringing a redesigned diaphragm, larger drivers and a lighter overall build.
The most notable change is the diaphragm. FiiO says the FT15 uses an 800nm-thick diaphragm, making it 86.7% thinner than the one used in the FT5. The new diaphragm also features a full-face diamond coating designed to improve rigidity. According to FiiO, the design allows the headphones to deliver frequency response extending up to 40kHz.
Larger 101mm Drivers
The FT15 also moves to larger 101mm planar drivers, compared with the 90mm drivers in the FT5. FiiO claims the increased size provides an effective radiating area of 6,443.5mm² and is intended to create a more spacious and open soundstage.
The drivers use FiiO’s patented magnet arrangement, which is designed to maintain a more uniform magnetic field across the diaphragm. The company says this helps reduce unwanted breakup and distortion.
The headphones also feature a 28nm electroplated voice coil, which FiiO describes as a chip-grade design intended to improve durability and resistance to vibration-related damage.
Lower Weight and Easier Amplification
The FT15 has a sensitivity rating of 95dB/mW and an impedance of 24Ω. While these specifications mean the headphones can be driven by many portable DACs and headphone amplifiers, FiiO says users can benefit from a more powerful amplifier for greater dynamic performance.
At 425g, the FT15 is also lighter than the 456g FT5. A carbon-fibre headband contributes to the reduced weight, while the earcups are made from North American black walnut. Because natural wood is used, the appearance can vary between individual pairs.
Accessories Included
FiiO supplies the FT15 with two sets of earpads, with suede pads fitted at the factory and protein-leather pads included as an alternative.
The package also includes a 4.4mm balanced cable made from 6N monocrystalline copper. FiiO says the cable undergoes more than 100 hours of cryogenic treatment at -192°C. A 6.35mm adapter, XLR-4 adapter and linen storage case are also included.
Price and Availability
The FiiO FT15 is priced at €499 in Europe and US$499 in the United States. The headphones are currently available through FiiO’s AliExpress store, while availability in additional markets is being introduced gradually.
Local retailers are also expected to begin offering the FT15 as regional distribution expands.
