The UAE’s state-backed AI firm joins global tech giants in a record-breaking $40 billion data center deal as it accelerates expansion from the Gulf to Silicon Valley.
Abu Dhabi: MGX, a relatively new player in the global artificial intelligence landscape, has surged to the forefront of international tech investment by partnering with Nvidia, Sequoia Capital, Microsoft, and BlackRock in a historic $40 billion data center acquisition. The move cements the UAE’s ambitions to become a central hub for AI infrastructure and innovation.
Barely a year after its creation by Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund, MGX is already making headlines with strategic deals that connect Gulf capital to the world’s largest AI projects. Its latest investment—the acquisition of Aligned Data Centers—marks the largest data center transaction in history. The buyer consortium includes some of the biggest names in tech and finance, such as Nvidia, Microsoft, BlackRock, and Elon Musk’s xAI.
Aligned Data Centers, based in the United States, operates large-scale facilities that power hyperscalers and cloud providers across North and South America. The company is known for building and managing advanced infrastructure to meet the exploding computational demands of artificial intelligence systems.
Expanding AI Infrastructure on a Global Scale
For MGX, the acquisition is part of a broader mission to expand AI infrastructure through the AI Infrastructure Partnership (AIP), a $100 billion global collaboration that includes Microsoft, BlackRock, and other major investors. The initiative aims to scale data center capacity in the United States and beyond to support next-generation AI workloads, from machine learning to generative models.
This partnership also builds upon a deepening relationship between the UAE and U.S. tech giants. Earlier this year, Microsoft invested $1.5 billion in G42—MGX’s founding partner—to accelerate regional AI development using Microsoft’s Azure platform. Together, these collaborations form a growing “AI corridor” that connects U.S. innovation with Gulf investment, linking capital, data, and energy resources across continents.
Patrick Moorhead, founder of Moor Insights & Strategy, said the partnership highlights shifting global alliances in the race for AI dominance. “U.S. firms are now actively engaging with Middle Eastern investors to ensure capital doesn’t flow toward China instead,” Moorhead said. “The amount of investment required to build the next wave of AI infrastructure is astronomical, and the Gulf states are both willing and able to take those risks.”
He compared MGX’s strategy to that of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), which has used its oil wealth to diversify into high-tech sectors, including gaming, semiconductors, and advanced computing.
Venture Capital Turns to Sovereign Funds
The rise of sovereign-backed technology investors like MGX also reflects a changing dynamic in the global venture landscape. With fundraising becoming increasingly difficult amid tightening financial markets, many venture capital firms are turning to sovereign wealth funds for stability and scale.
Bradley Tusk, co-founder of Tusk Capital Partners, believes MGX will be welcomed by the venture community. “This is a tough fundraising environment, and sovereign funds represent a deep and reliable source of capital,” Tusk said. “I think they’ll find strong acceptance among investors who are looking for long-term partners rather than short-term returns.”
However, he warned that MGX’s growing proximity to political figures, including its participation in U.S. deals backed by former President Donald Trump, could draw scrutiny if the political landscape shifts. “The biggest risk is perception,” Tusk said. “Right now, the narrative is that they’re part of Trump’s circle. That can either be a strength or a liability depending on who’s in the White House.”
A Global Race for AI Capacity
The surge in AI infrastructure investment comes as demand for compute power outpaces supply. From startups to tech giants, companies are scrambling to secure the high-performance data centers and GPU clusters needed to train and deploy AI models.
Even established players like Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft are renting GPU capacity from third-party providers such as CoreWeave, instead of building all their facilities in-house. MGX’s arrival adds a new and well-funded contender to this competition, offering a fresh source of capital for the world’s AI buildout.
The partnership also highlights a new era of cooperation between Gulf sovereign wealth funds and U.S. technology firms—one where oil-driven economies are reinventing themselves as energy and infrastructure backers of the digital future.
Building the Next Chapter of AI
For Abu Dhabi, MGX represents more than just another investment arm. It is a strategic vehicle for transforming energy wealth into long-term technological power. By aligning with global leaders like Nvidia and Sequoia, MGX is positioning the UAE at the intersection of finance, infrastructure, and AI innovation.
Its participation in landmark projects like the $40 billion Aligned Data Centers deal not only underscores the scale of its ambitions but also signals how rapidly the Gulf region is becoming essential to the future of computing.
In a world where access to data, chips, and computing power defines national competitiveness, MGX’s rise from a newcomer to a global AI heavyweight reflects both Abu Dhabi’s foresight and the shifting balance of global technological influence.
As AI continues to reshape economies, the UAE’s growing role in powering the infrastructure behind it ensures that the next era of digital transformation will have a distinctly Middle Eastern foundation.
