Abu Dhabi: The Technology Innovation Institute (TII), the applied research arm of Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), has partnered with NVIDIA to establish the Middle East’s first Joint Lab for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics. The initiative marks a significant milestone in the UAE’s drive to position itself as a global hub for advanced technologies.
A First-of-Its-Kind Collaboration
The launch of the TII-NVAITC Joint Lab for AI and Robotics was announced during a signing ceremony at TII’s headquarters in Abu Dhabi. The agreement was formalized by Dr. Najwa Aaraj, CEO of TII, and Marc Domenech, Regional Director for NVIDIA in the META region, in the presence of senior leaders from ATRC and NVIDIA’s global executive team.
The new facility represents the first NVIDIA AI Technology Center (NVAITC) established in the Middle East, extending NVIDIA’s global network of AI research collaborations into robotics for the first time. By combining TII’s expertise in AI, robotics, and autonomous systems with NVIDIA’s leadership in accelerated computing, the lab aims to develop next-generation AI models and robotics platforms that can operate in complex, real-world environments.
Driving AI-Enhanced Robotics
According to TII, the partnership will accelerate the convergence of perception, control, and language models, enabling the creation of robotic systems that can reason, adapt, and act more intelligently. This includes advancing research into embodied AI, humanoid robotics, and real-time robotic control systems powered by NVIDIA’s cutting-edge hardware and software platforms.
Dr. Aaraj described the collaboration as a major step in developing “AI-enhanced robotic systems capable of reasoning, adapting, and acting in complex environments.” She emphasized that by integrating TII’s robotic platforms with NVIDIA’s computing power and AI models, the lab is laying the foundation for a new era of intelligent machines.
Falcon Models and Large-Scale AI
The lab will also integrate TII’s Falcon family of large language models, which were the first and largest developed in the Middle East. These models will play a role in powering the lab’s AI-driven robotics, further embedding the UAE’s contributions into the global AI ecosystem.
Research priorities will span robotic learning and control at scale, integration of large language models into robotic systems, and the creation of modular platforms designed for rapid deployment. By advancing these areas, the lab aims to make breakthroughs that can be applied to industries ranging from manufacturing and logistics to healthcare and smart cities.
Boosting UAE’s Global Tech Standing
The establishment of the lab reflects Abu Dhabi’s long-term strategy to achieve technological sovereignty while contributing to global innovation. It follows on the heels of the recently announced US–UAE AI Acceleration Partnership and aligns with the UAE’s ambition to be a leader in the development of AI and robotics worldwide.
Officials highlighted that the lab strengthens the UAE’s position as both a regional and global player in advanced technologies. By hosting the first NVAITC facility in the Middle East, Abu Dhabi is signaling its readiness to lead in applied AI research while fostering cross-border knowledge exchange.
Carlo Ruiz, Vice President of Enterprise Solutions & Operations for NVIDIA in EMEA, called the launch “a new chapter” for the company’s global NVAITC network. He noted that expanding into robotics in Abu Dhabi for the first time would accelerate breakthroughs that shape the future of intelligent systems.
Open Innovation and Real-World Impact
TII and NVIDIA emphasized that the lab will prioritize open innovation and collaboration. In addition to internal projects, the center will support open-source initiatives, engage in cross-network research through the global NVAITC community, and foster partnerships with industry and academia.
The lab builds on TII’s existing robotic platforms and field-tested components, including robotic arms and autonomous delivery systems, ensuring that research is not only technologically advanced but also practically applicable.
