AI-Powered Fintech Alaan Secures $48M in One of MENA’s Largest Series A Rounds

AI-Powered Fintech

Dubai – Alaan, the AI-driven spend management platform founded by former McKinsey consultants Parthi Duraisamy and Karun Kurien, has raised $48 million in Series A funding—marking one of the region’s largest early-stage investments in fintech. The round was led by Peak XV Partners (formerly Sequoia Capital India & SEA) and included participation from Y Combinator, 468 Capital, Pioneer Fund, and notable founders such as Hosam Arab (Tabby), Mudassir Sheikha (Careem), and YouTuber Khalid Al Ameri.

This latest funding positions Alaan as a rising force in MENA’s growing fintech landscape, placing it alongside regional success stories like Tamara, the Saudi BNPL platform that raised $110 million in its Series A in 2021.

From Pain Point to Product

The startup was born out of Duraisamy’s personal frustrations with corporate spending during his time at McKinsey’s Dubai office, where American Express cards were often declined across the Middle East. “I’d spend weekends uploading receipts and reconciling expenses manually,” he recalled.

Determined to fix this widespread inefficiency, Duraisamy and Kurien built Alaan to modernize how regional finance teams manage spending—introducing a tech-first, AI-enhanced approach that combines virtual cards, automation, and regulatory compliance.

A Customer-Centric Approach That Resonates

Since its 2022 launch, Alaan has processed over 2.5 million transactions for more than 1,500 finance teams, including high-profile names like G42, Careem, Tabby, and Lulu Group. Its AI-powered platform claims to have saved finance departments over 1.5 million hours of manual work by automating time-consuming tasks like receipt matching, reconciliation, and VAT extraction.

“The category has demonstrated strong product-market fit in the MENA region, and Alaan stands out as the category leader,” said GV Ravishankar, Managing Director at Peak XV Partners. “Their product-led, customer-first strategy has made them a standout.”

Navigating Regulatory Hurdles

Despite its rapid growth, Alaan’s journey hasn’t been without obstacles. Following a $2.5 million seed round in 2021, the company faced regulatory delays that prevented it from launching for nearly a year in the UAE. Expanding into Saudi Arabia came with similar roadblocks, requiring prolonged approval processes from the central bank before launching operations in January this year.

“The biggest challenge we faced, both in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, was simply going live,” said Duraisamy.

Reimagining AI’s Role in Finance

Alaan’s early bet on AI integration has played a critical role in its differentiation. In early 2023, it became one of the first fintechs in the Middle East to integrate OpenAI. Though its initial chatbot product failed to gain traction, the team pivoted—placing AI in the background to streamline backend processes and enhance user experience without disrupting workflows.

This subtle but powerful use of AI now sits at the core of Alaan’s operations, especially in supporting compliance-heavy tasks like VAT automation, which is particularly valuable in MENA’s complex regulatory landscape.

Profitability and Capital Efficiency

Unlike many growth-stage startups, Alaan is already profitable. The company spent $5 million to generate $10 million in revenue, reflecting a disciplined, capital-efficient model that investors found compelling.

Duraisamy credits Y Combinator and mentorship networks for instilling that mindset. “We are not in a market where size is an advantage like the US or Europe,” he said. “What really matters here are the fundamentals—how much revenue we generate, how strong our go-to-market is, and how efficiently we deploy capital.”

Scaling Up in Saudi Arabia and Beyond

With the new funding, Alaan plans to double down on hiring in sales, compliance, and customer success, while enhancing its AI automation capabilities. It is also accelerating growth in Saudi Arabia, where transaction volumes have been doubling month over month since launch.

Backed by a strong foundation and a surge in investor confidence, Alaan is now poised to lead the next wave of AI-driven financial innovation in the MENA region—transforming how businesses manage money in real time.
