Apple clarifies iOS 27 Restricted Mode will not apply to Apple Upgrade leases

Apple Upgrade leases

Apple has confirmed that the new Restricted Mode discovered in iOS 27 will not be used to enforce payments for its newly launched Apple Upgrade leasing programme, easing concerns that customers could lose access to their devices after missing an instalment.

The clarification follows reports highlighting a new system in iOS 27 beta called App Managed Features, which appears to allow authorised financing providers to manage devices tied to financing agreements. The feature, first spotted in iOS 27 beta 1 and still present in beta 4, includes tools that can monitor the status of a financing contract and apply restrictions if payments fall behind.

The system is built around a background service known as appmanagedfeaturesd, enabling approved finance providers to enrol devices, verify financing status and, when necessary, limit access to selected apps. The restrictions rely on Apple’s ManagedSettings framework, allowing only a limited number of built-in apps, the financing provider’s app, approved third-party apps and those with critical alert permissions to remain accessible.

Apple has also integrated the feature with Find My through new financing-related components, including a dedicated Partner Finance Lock (PFLock). While the integration does not appear to give lenders access to a user’s location, it enables devices to remain linked to Apple’s activation system, preventing full reactivation after a reset until financing requirements are met.

Additional components, including FindMyUICore, MobileActivation and finance-specific device attestation tools, indicate that Apple has created a comprehensive framework for managing financed devices, allowing approved partners to enforce restrictions while maintaining access to essential services.

Despite the sophisticated infrastructure, Apple told The Verge that the feature will not be used for customers enrolled in the Apple Upgrade programme. The company did not disclose its intended purpose, however.

Industry observers believe the technology may instead support financing arrangements offered through mobile carriers, retailers or third-party lenders, particularly in markets where device restrictions are already used to secure instalment payments.

India has previously seen lenders collaborate with smartphone manufacturers to remotely restrict financed devices after payment defaults. However, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) instructed non-bank lenders to halt the practice in late 2024 over concerns about customer privacy and the sharing of default information.

More recently, the RBI proposed allowing lenders to restrict selected phone functions when a loan remains unpaid for at least 90 days, provided customers consent through their financing agreement and receive advance notice. Under the proposal, critical services such as emergency calls, internet connectivity, incoming calls and government alerts would remain available—similar to the safeguards built into Apple’s Restricted Mode.

While Apple Upgrade users will not be affected, the presence of the technology suggests Apple is preparing to support financing partners that may require device management tools in specific regions or lending programmes in the future.
