Apple has rolled out its new Digital ID feature, allowing users to securely create and use a digital identification card within Apple Wallet using data from their U.S. passport. Currently launched in beta, this feature will initially be accepted at Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints across more than 250 airports in the United States for domestic travel.
According to Apple, the Digital ID provides a simple and secure way for users to carry their identity on an iPhone or Apple Watch. It particularly benefits individuals who may not have a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state ID. However, Apple emphasized that this feature does not replace a physical passport and cannot be used for international travel or border crossings.
Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s Vice President of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, stated that the company aims to expand the ways people can present their identity while maintaining Apple’s commitment to security and privacy. She highlighted that users have already embraced adding driver’s licenses and state IDs to Wallet since 2022, and this new feature extends the convenience to more individuals.
Setting up a Digital ID is straightforward. Users can open the Wallet app, tap the “Add” button, select “Driver’s License or ID Cards,” and then choose “Digital ID.” The setup process involves scanning the passport’s photo page, reading the embedded chip for verification, taking a selfie, and performing facial movements to confirm identity. Once verified, the Digital ID is securely stored in Wallet.
Using the Digital ID is equally simple. Users double-click the side or Home button, choose their Digital ID, and hold their iPhone or Apple Watch near an identity reader. Before sharing any information, they can review the details being requested and approve it through Face ID or Touch ID authentication.
Apple assured that Digital ID employs advanced security measures built into its devices to prevent theft and tampering. All data is encrypted and stored only on the user’s device, meaning Apple cannot track when or where an ID is used or what data is shared. Each request for information requires the user’s explicit biometric approval.
The company also announced plans to expand the use of Digital ID to allow identity and age verification at select businesses and organizations, both in person and online.
Currently, Apple Wallet supports the addition of driver’s licenses and state IDs in 12 U.S. states and Puerto Rico, with recent expansions in Montana, North Dakota, and West Virginia. Internationally, Apple has begun offering similar digital identification options in Japan through the My Number Card integration on iPhone.
