Crypto Scam Alert: Google Ad Network Phishing Targets Pudgy Penguins NFT Users

NFT

Users of the Pudgy Penguins NFT project are the victim of a concerning new phishing scam. The crypto community is alarmed as a result of the attackers’ use of advanced techniques to trick Web3 wallet owners.

Unveiling a Malevolent Advertising Campaign

ScamSniffer claims that the scam was made public after a user complained that an advertisement on a Singapore news website had led them to a fake Pudgy Penguins website. According to investigations, the attack is a component of a larger effort that targets Web3 users with malicious advertising.

How the Scam Works

The criminals disseminated phishing messages via the Google Ad Network. Malicious scripts located on the Adloox tracking domain were present in these advertisements. These advertisements contained code that looked for Web3 wallets on viewers’ browsers. When a wallet was detected, the user was taken to pudqypenguin[.]com, a fake website made especially to collect wallet details.

Researchers caution that although the current focus seems to be on Pudgy Penguins NFT users, this strategy could be readily modified to target other Web3 projects, posing a serious threat to the entire cryptocurrency ecosystem.

Adloox Analytics and Prebid.js vulnerabilities

Additionally, the fraud uses the header bidding tool Prebid.js to expose vulnerabilities in websites. These websites run the risk of sending malware-filled scripts through their ads when paired with the Adloox analytics module, endangering unwary consumers.

Strategies for Crypto Users to Reduce Risks

Security professionals are advising Web3 users to take preventative action in the wake of this incident. Important actions consist of:

putting in place trustworthy ad blockers to stop harmful advertisements.
Utilising different browsers for normal surfing and cryptocurrency-related tasks.
Before inputting wallet credentials, make sure to verify URLs.
detecting phishing attempts with tools such as ScamSniffer.
By taking these steps, people can lessen their susceptibility to these types of scams.

Community Reaction and Settlement

ZachXBT, a security researcher, was instrumental in revealing the campaign and quickly alerting Adloox to the problem. The most recent Adloox CDN JavaScript files that contained malicious code were eliminated as a result of these efforts, greatly lowering the hazard.

A Call to Action for the Crypto Industry

A clear reminder of the changing threats in the Web3 space is provided by this phishing campaign. Vigilance and preventative security measures are more important than ever as attackers use more complex techniques.
