How The UAE Plans To Achieve A Smart City?

Modern technology is advancing at an incredible rate, influencing modern engineering and transforming the way we live our everyday lives. Technology is significant as it provides valuable information to pave the way for smart cities. It is also driving improvement in modern construction methods, enabling the achievement of smart cities and supporting the industries to grow.

Due to their advanced infrastructures and services, Dubai and Abu Dhabi have been positioned as smart cities in the Middle East. These include mobility, health, safety, opportunities, and governance. But what makes smart cities so vital for the Middle East, and how does the UAE intend to create a smart city?

The UAE’s Commitment To Smart Cities

The UAE is taking extraordinary steps to develop smart cities to balance economic and social development. The government is ensuring sustainable development to provide the next generation with a safer, cleaner, and greener future. In addition, the Dubai 2040 Plan and Abu Dhabi’s Economic Vision 2030 strategy promote sustainability in the UAE.

The Dubai government is taking initiatives to strengthen the development of smart cities. One of the prominent projects that utilize the Internet of Things (IoT) to manage infrastructure is the Zayed Smart City Project.

Expanding To Smart, And More Sustainable Cities

By 2025, it is estimated that smart city technologies will receive a 22.7% increase in spending globally, Frost & Sullivan reported. IT infrastructure and data collection are making smart cities more efficient and more accessible. Expansion to sustainable cities increases economic benefits by providing access to a modern digital payments ecosystem, and energy-efficient multimodal transportation.

Bringing Innovating On A National Scale

Technological advancement supports smart cities developers to craft a diverse range of strategies at the federal level. These strategies facilitate the application and implementation of big data, renewable energy, blockchain, artificial intelligence, and enhanced mobility. This kind of national-level innovation is the key factor to enabling sustainability in smart cities.

UAE has contracted with a few countries to achieve innovation at a national scale and share technological expertise for smart cities transformation. ADDA and Intel have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to advance Abu Dhabi’s digital transformation. As part of this MoU, Intel is expected to share its expertise in the field of innovative technology and arrange workshops on video analytics, blockchain, and augmented reality.

Sustainability Efforts In Abu Dhabi, Dubai, And Masdar City

According to Economic Vision 2030, Abu Dhabi will be exporting competitive technologies and shifting from natural resources to innovation to thrive in its economy. Abu Dhabi initiated a master plan in Masdar city and established the pilot phase of the Zayed Smart City Project. It is moving from a traditional to a smart city through new initiatives and projects powered by innovation and future technologies.

Dubai is putting efforts into developing several smart cities including The Sustainable City, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Dubai South District, and Desert Rose City. These cities are aimed at producing happy and sustainable communities with technology, innovation, and collaboration.
