Fresh satellite imagery has revealed new damage to Amazon data centres in the Middle East, alongside apparent impacts on a key Saudi oil facility, following a new wave of missile and drone attacks attributed to Iran and its Houthi allies.
Images captured by Europe’s Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites indicate that the regional conflict has intensified, with military exchanges continuing between the United States and several Gulf nations on one side and Iran, Yemen’s Houthi movement, and Iran-backed militias in Iraq on the other. The satellite data provides independent evidence of infrastructure damage at a time when access to commercial imagery of the region has faced increasing restrictions.
Three Amazon data centres in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain had previously sustained damage during Iranian drone attacks on March 1. Those incidents disrupted Amazon Web Services operations across the region, forcing customers to shift workloads to alternative cloud locations while repair work continued.
On July 21, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that it had carried out another strike targeting Amazon data centres in Bahrain, claiming the facilities had been destroyed using cruise missiles. The statement was published by Iran’s state-affiliated Fars News Agency and later reported by several Western media outlets, including CNBC.
The IRGC subsequently released high-resolution satellite images that it said showed damage to two Amazon data centres in the Bahraini coastal towns of Zallaq and Askar. The origin of the imagery has not been confirmed, although reports suggest Iran has increasingly relied on commercial satellite data provided by Chinese operators.
The latest imagery underscores the growing vulnerability of critical digital infrastructure in the region as the conflict broadens, with cloud computing facilities and energy assets emerging as strategic targets.
