Saudi Arabia Innovates with State-of-the-Art Gas Stations for Advanced Combined Cycle Power Generation

Last Updated on July 10, 2024 by Ola Precious Akinkuolie

Saudi Arabia seeks to achieve net zero by 2060 using advanced gas-fired power plants with CO2 capture and storage. Siemens Energy will supply critical technologies, providing nearly 4 gigawatts of power, and has signed a 25-year maintenance contract worth USD 1.5 billion for two plants. Below are further details on Saudi’s combined cycle power generation

Features Of Saudi’s Combined Cycle Power Generation

Taiba 2 and Qassim 2, two of the world’s largest and most efficient combined-cycle power plants, will be built in western and central Saudi Arabia. Each site will generate roughly 2,000 megawatts from Siemens Energy’s combined HL-class gas turbines, steam turbines, and generators. China Energy International Group is Siemens Energy’s contracting partner and EPC.

These new power facilities, replacing outdated oil-based power plants and reducing CO2 emissions by up to 60%, will help Saudi Arabia’s expanding population and economy. In addition, they align with the country’s CO2 capture and storage strategy to achieve carbon-neutral energy.

Taiba 2 and Qassim 2 will start in simple cycle mode in 2026 and switch to a combined cycle in 2027.

What is Siemens Energy?

Siemens Energy is one of the leading energy technology companies worldwide.

How do CCGT power stations work?

A combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant makes use of exhaust heat from gas-powered turbines to produce steam via a (HRSG)- heat recovery steam generator. Then, this steam powers a steam turbine, which provides additional electricity or mechanical drive.

Which is the combined cycle power plant in KSA?

Located in Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia, Qurayyah Combined Cycle Power Plant is a 3,230MW gas-fired power project.

What is the largest power plant in Saudi Arabia?

The Jazan Integrated Combined Cycle Plant is one of the largest and most complex in the world. It has a capacity of 3.8 GW and produces 75,000 tons of oxygen and nitrogen daily, 585,000 tons of steam per hour, and 184,000 Nm3 of hydrogen per hour through integrated gasification.

What is Saudi Arabia’s power generation capacity?

The Saudi Power Company had an estimated 86.24 gigawatts of electricity generation capacity in 2023.

What is the primary source of electricity in Saudi Arabia?

40% of the energy generated is from oil, 52% is from natural gas, and 8% is from steam.

Why is electricity so cheap in Saudi Arabia?

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia signed deals to buy cheaper electricity from two large-scale wind farms, aiming to boost renewable energy in its power grid.

Saudi’s combined cycle power generation marks a significant step towards a sustainable future. This showcases innovative strategies to reduce emissions and enhance energy efficiency. With Siemens Energy’s state-of-the-art technology, KSA is poised to progress significantly toward its net-zero goals by 2060.
