Saudi Arabia Promotes Vision 2030 by Increasing the Supply of Desalinated Water to 50%

Saudi Arabia

Record Rise in Production of Desalinated Water

The production of desalinated saltwater increased by 31% in 2023, accounting for 50% of the distributed water supply in Saudi Arabia, marking a major advancement for the country’s water industry. According to the most recent Water Accounts report from the General Authority for Statistics, this represents a significant increase from 44 percent in 2022.

Decreased Reliance on Groundwater in Agriculture

The research also noted that the agricultural sector’s use of non-renewable groundwater decreased by 7% from 10,044 million cubic meters in 2022 to 9,356 million cubic meters in 2023. This cut demonstrates Saudi Arabia’s calculated effort to lessen its dependency on limited water supplies as part of its Vision 2030 plan.

Growth in Recycling and Renewable Groundwater Initiatives

In 2023, non-renewable groundwater abstraction fell by 6%, while renewable groundwater abstraction rose to 21% of total groundwater utilization. In support of these programs, water reuse usage increased by 12% to 555 million cubic meters, demonstrating the Kingdom’s dedication to recycling and sustainability.

Water Use in Industry and Agriculture

The biggest user of water, agriculture, consumed 12,298 million cubic meters in 2023. At 0.5 percent, its portion of overall water expenses was still negligible. However, industrial sectors were heavily dependent on distributed water for operations, as evidenced by the fact that they accounted for 61.4 percent of water-related expenditures. The amount of water used by the industrial sector grew dramatically; in 2023, it accounted for 30% of the distributed water, up from 22% in 2022.

Reusing and Desalinating Water to Address Water Scarcity

In order to address the severe problems associated with water scarcity, Saudi Arabia must transition to desalinated and renewable water sources. With non-renewable sources accounting for 62 percent of the natural water supply in 2023—down from 68 percent in 2022—groundwater resources are still being depleted. As a result of increased water efficiency, per capita household water use decreased from 112.8 liters per day in 2022 to 102.1 liters in 2023.

Sustainable Water Management in Vision 2030

The Kingdom’s long-term approach to water security is demonstrated by its investments in desalination and water reuse technology. Saudi Arabia hopes to establish itself as a regional leader in tackling water constraint through innovation and sustainable practices by boosting recycling programs and developing desalination infrastructure.

Possibilities for Better Farming Methods

The substantial water use of the agriculture sector highlights the need for more effective irrigation techniques and crop variety, even with advancements in water management. These adjustments may lessen the industry’s reliance on water resources and improve its sustainability even more.

Objectives for the Economy and Environment

Saudi Arabia’s water plan is essential to attaining both environmental protection and economic diversification as it advances its Vision 2030 program. The Kingdom exhibits its dedication to striking a balance between resource conservation and industrial growth by giving priority to sustainable water practices.
