Overview of the Mission: A 13-Year Space Exploration Expedition
With a seven-year journey to the main asteroid belt beyond Mars after a six-year spacecraft building phase, the UAE has started an ambitious 13-year space exploration project.
Important Contract for EMA Lander Development Signed
The UAE Space Agency and the Technology Innovation Institute (TII) have formally agreed to design and construct the EMA Lander in front of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. As part of the Emirates Mission to the Asteroid Belt (EMA), this cutting-edge lander will travel on board the MBR Explorer spacecraft. Its main objective is to land for scientific research on Justitia, the eighth asteroid.
Collaboration and Leadership: Fostering National Expertise
His Excellency Faisal Al Bannai, Secretary-General of the Advanced Technology Research Council, and His Excellency Dr. Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, Chairman of the UAE Space Agency, signed the agreement. The design, development, and testing of the lander will be led by TII. The UAE’s goals of involving local entrepreneurs, giving 50% of the initiative to UAE-based businesses, and promoting global connections are all in line with this agreement.
Fuelling the Growth of the National Space Industry
The EMA Mission Director, Mohsen Al Awadhi, emphasised that TII was chosen because of its experience and skills. While upholding international standards, the mission seeks to support innovation in the Emirati space sector. The UAE will be positioned as a leader in the global space industry thanks to this initiative, which will also help Emirati startups and draw in foreign cooperation.
Dedication to Innovation and Cutting-Edge Technology
TII CEO Dr. Najwa Aaraj said he was proud to have spearheaded the lander’s development, highlighting the UAE’s contribution to interplanetary exploration and the establishment of a robust space technology ecosystem. The UAE’s determination to push the frontiers of innovation and establish itself as a world leader in space science and technology is reflected in the mission.
Scientific Goals: Solving the Mysteries of the Solar System
During its trip, the MBR Explorer spacecraft will pass by seven asteroids in close proximity, gathering crucial data. In order to shed light on the solar system’s development, the EMA mission seeks to investigate the origins, makeup, and evolution of asteroids. It also aims to evaluate organic and volatile materials in the asteroid belt and investigate resources that are rich in water.
An Advancement in Space Travel
The UAE’s commitment to furthering space exploration and developing a strong space technology ecosystem is demonstrated by the EMA mission. The mission represents a major turning point in the UAE’s ascent to prominence in space science by utilising both domestic knowledge and international partnerships.
