UAE Requests Consular Services from France

Calls have been made by the United Arab Emirates for France to provide “all consular services” for Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of the messaging app Telegram. The UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that after Durov’s arrest and the subsequent prolongation of his custody in France, looking out for its residents is a “top priority”.

Details of Durov’s Detention

Pavel Durov, 39, an Emirati national born in Russia, was taken into custody on Saturday at Paris-Le Bourget Airport. According to the Paris prosecutor’s office, the detention is related to a judicial investigation that was started last month and involves claims of 12 criminal offences related to the Telegram app.

The Diplomatic Reaction of the UAE

The UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement early on Tuesday that it is “closely following” Durov’s case. The ministry has asked the French authorities to make sure Durov gets all the consular assistance he needs. “Caring for citizens, preserving their interests, and providing comprehensive care are a top priority for the UAE,” added the statement.

Durov’s Nationality and Past

Durov was born in Russia, but he lived a large part of his early years in Italy. He is a citizen of the United Arab Emirates, France, Russia, and St. Kitts & Nevis, among other nations.

The President of France’s Reaction

Speaking out on the matter, French President Emmanuel Macron said that Durov’s detention was a result of an impartial legal probe rather than a political one. Macron reaffirmed France’s commitment to free speech while stressing that “freedoms are upheld within a legal framework” to safeguard the fundamental rights of its people.
