The Nigerian tech startup ecosystem is growing quickly, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has expressed a strong desire to collaborate with it. The CEO of the Dubai Future Foundation, Khalfan Belhoul, made this announcement on October 13, 2024, at the GITEX Global event. The world’s largest platform for startups and investors, GITEX Global is held annually in Dubai and offers a space for innovation and cooperation.
A focus on cooperation and innovation
Leading the UAE’s smart city strategy across several business groups, Khalfan Belhoul emphasized the significance of fostering innovation via collaborations. “There are a lot of inventions in Nigeria, and more can be done,” he said, emphasizing the importance of forming partnerships that help advance the digital economy. In terms of technology development, we are very much open to collaborations, but it all comes down to having the proper talks.”
Nigeria’s Growing Startup Scene
Belhoul also recognized the thriving startup culture in Nigeria, where a number of businesses have already expanded into the United Arab Emirates. He discussed Nigeria’s IT scene’s potential for expansion and emphasized how important it is becoming to Africa’s digital revolution.
Nigeria has seen large investments over the years in a number of tech-driven industries, including edtech, fintech, healthtech, and agritech. Specifically, Lagos has developed into a significant hub that accommodates over 400 companies. In the first quarter of 2024 alone, sources indicate that 35% of the $466 million in funding that African digital companies received came from Nigerian firms. Notably, Moove, a transportation technology startup, was responsible for a sizable portion of the money sent to Nigeria at this time.
Africa’s Top Investment Destination
Nigeria’s startup scene is expanding, making it one of the most alluring places in Africa for tech investors. Nigeria is the top destination for tech investments on the continent; from 2019 to 2023, 29% of the $15 billion raised by African startups went to Nigerian startups. This has been fueled by the nation’s thriving and dynamic tech scene, which is garnering interest from around the region and beyond.
UAE’s Priority for Talent Development and R&D
In response to questions about the exodus of African talent to Dubai, Belhoul emphasized the value of funding R&D and developing talent in order to maintain the viability of companies. “There has to be investment in R&D and talent development,” he said, highlighting the necessity of long-term plans to be competitive in the digital economy.
Goals in Alignment: Nigeria and the UAE
The UAE’s desire to work with Nigeria is consistent with its overarching goal of turning into a worldwide center for technological advancement and innovation. The UAE hopes to draw in more businesspeople and investors by utilizing its cutting-edge infrastructure and pro-business laws. This collaboration also demonstrates the UAE’s dedication to assisting developing nations like Nigeria, which have shown enormous promise in the technology industry.
