March 13 (Reuters) – A high-ranking United Arab Emirates official is set to visit Washington to advocate for streamlined access to U.S. technology and explore investment opportunities in the country, Bloomberg News reported on Thursday, citing sources familiar with the discussions.
High-Level Meetings with Trump Administration Officials
Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE’s national security adviser and brother of the nation’s president, is expected to engage with senior officials in the Trump administration as early as next week. Among those anticipated to participate in the discussions are Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. However, it remains unclear whether President Trump will be involved directly.
U.S. Tightens AI Chip Export Restrictions
The visit follows the U.S. government’s recent decision to tighten export controls on artificial intelligence chips, such as those produced by Nvidia (NVDA.O), in an effort to curb China’s access to advanced semiconductor technology. While key allies—including Japan, Britain, South Korea, and the Netherlands—have been granted exemptions, other nations like the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore are subject to restrictions.
UAE’s Tech Ambitions and U.S. Concerns
Both the U.S. Commerce Department and the Abu Dhabi Media Office declined to comment when approached by Reuters, while Nvidia also refrained from providing a statement.
As it looks to establish a competitive digital sector, the UAE, a significant oil-rich nation, is keen to increase its access to American technical innovations. Washington, meanwhile, has expressed reservations about Abu Dhabi’s close links to Beijing, which may affect its position on granting further access to American technology.
Diplomatic Visit Requested by Trump Administration
According to Bloomberg, Sheikh Tahnoon’s trip was prompted by a request from the Trump administration, signaling a possible willingness to negotiate terms that could shape future tech collaborations between the two nations.
