High-stakes talks to address AI chip export controls and investment opportunities
Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the United Arab Emirates’ national security adviser and brother of the UAE president, is preparing to visit Washington to advocate for improved access to American technology and explore new investment opportunities in the United States, according to a Bloomberg report.
Sheikh Tahnoon is expected to hold meetings with top US officials, including Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. However, it remains uncertain whether President Donald Trump will take part in the discussions.
Talks to Focus on AI Chip Export Controls and Strategic Partnerships
The visit follows the US government’s recent tightening of export controls on artificial intelligence (AI) chips, such as those produced by Nvidia. While key US allies, including Japan, Britain, South Korea, and the Netherlands, have largely been exempted from these restrictions, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore face stricter limitations.
The UAE has been actively seeking greater access to cutting-edge American technology to strengthen its domestic tech sector. However, Washington’s concerns over the UAE’s growing ties with China have complicated potential technology-sharing agreements.
According to Bloomberg, Sheikh Tahnoon’s visit comes at the invitation of the Trump administration. The US Commerce Department, the Abu Dhabi Media Office, and Nvidia have declined to comment on the matter.
