Jordan has taken another step to boost its digital economy by signing a cooperation agreement with Maryland Technology Development Corporation, a US-based innovation agency focused on technology investment and startup growth.
The memorandum of understanding was signed by Sami Smeirat during his recent visit to the United States, where he attended the SelectUSA Investment Summit. According to the Jordan News Agency Petra, the agreement is designed to strengthen collaboration between Jordanian and American startups while encouraging cross-border investment.
The partnership aims to connect Jordan’s growing tech sector with US innovation networks, making it easier for startups to expand internationally. It also supports Jordan’s broader push toward digital transformation and enhanced e-government services. The country’s information and communications technology sector currently generates over $3.3 billion in annual revenue, reflecting its rising role in the regional digital economy.
Smeirat described the agreement as a practical move to turn shared ambitions into real opportunities for investors and businesses, reinforcing Jordan’s ambition to position itself as a leading technology hub in the region.
Under the deal, Jordanian companies will gain improved access to US markets, while international firms will be encouraged to view Jordan as a strategic gateway to the Middle East and North Africa.
Troy LeMaile-Stovall, CEO of TEDCO, welcomed the partnership, saying it would help strengthen Jordan’s entrepreneurial ecosystem and create new business opportunities in Maryland as well.
The agreement also outlines plans for joint trade missions, innovation events, and Jordan’s participation in the TEDCO Expo, further deepening engagement between the two sides.
This initiative builds on earlier collaboration efforts, including a seminar held with the World Trade Institute and the University System of Maryland, which helped lay the groundwork for stronger ties between companies in both countries.
Overall, the partnership highlights Jordan’s ongoing efforts to expand its global tech connections, strengthen its startup ecosystem, and solidify its position as a regional center for innovation and IT services.
