New ministerial changes signal nation’s drive to boost global competitiveness and digital governance
Abu Dhabi – June 2025 – In a sweeping government reshuffle, the United Arab Emirates has announced the formation of a new Ministry of Foreign Trade, a renaming of the Ministry of Economy, and a landmark move to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into high-level national decision-making.
The changes, approved by President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, were announced by Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and are expected to strengthen the country’s positioning in global trade, tourism, and digital transformation.
New Ministry of Foreign Trade Appointed
A major highlight of the restructuring is the establishment of the Ministry of Foreign Trade, reflecting the UAE’s increasing focus on global commerce amid evolving economic dynamics. Dr. Thani Al Zeyoudi, previously Minister of State for Foreign Trade, has been appointed as the first Minister of Foreign Trade.
This new ministry is tasked with developing foreign trade policies, expanding international partnerships, and enhancing the UAE’s export capacity—critical elements for sustaining the country’s non-oil economic diversification agenda.
Ministry of Economy Rebranded to Include Tourism
In another significant change, the Ministry of Economy has been renamed the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, and will be headed by Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri. The addition of tourism to the ministry’s portfolio underscores the sector’s growing importance as a driver of GDP and job creation in the UAE.
