UAE Strengthens US AI Ties Amid Regional Tensions and Supply Chain Risks

Supply Chain Risks

The UAE is accelerating its investment in American technology and sovereign artificial intelligence infrastructure despite regional tensions and supply-chain disruptions linked to the Iran conflict.

The arrival of the UAE’s first shipment of Nvidia’s advanced AI chips on Friday highlighted Abu Dhabi’s determination to strengthen its domestic AI capabilities while deepening strategic ties with US technology firms. Speaking about the partnership, Yousef Al Otaiba said the Emirates was fully committed to American technology and was “doubling down” on cooperation rather than seeking alternatives.

Al Otaiba described the UAE-US AI relationship as one of the decade’s most important economic partnerships, underlining the country’s growing focus on securing access to advanced chips and computing systems.

The collaboration has already produced major investments, including Microsoft’s $1.5 billion investment in AI and cloud firm G42 in 2024, alongside a UAE pledge to invest $1.4 trillion in AI infrastructure projects across the United States.

The latest chip delivery is part of a broader strategy to establish sovereign AI systems within the UAE, ensuring critical infrastructure, sensitive data and key applications remain under national control. In March, Nvidia signed a major agreement with sovereign AI company Aleria to develop advanced AI infrastructure powered by Blackwell Ultra chips.

Industry leaders say geopolitical instability has increased the urgency for sovereign AI rather than slowing technological investment. Marc Domenech, Nvidia’s vice president of enterprise for the Middle East, North Africa and Southern Europe, said the conflict highlighted the importance of resilient and localised AI systems.

Eric Leandri, chief executive of Aleria, said governments and companies are increasingly reassessing their dependence on foreign cloud infrastructure, particularly for critical sectors such as defence, health care and financial services.

Sovereign AI has become a cornerstone of the UAE’s long-term technology ambitions, with officials viewing it as both a national security priority and a driver of economic diversification. Earlier this year, Ahmed Abdulla of Haimaker.ai said Gulf governments were positioning AI as a future contributor to GDP growth across industries including logistics, government services and finance.

Domestic adoption is also strengthening the UAE’s AI ambitions. A recent AI diffusion report by Microsoft ranked the UAE among the world’s leading countries for AI adoption, with 64 per cent of the working-age population using AI by the end of 2025, placing the country ahead of the US and several European nations.

Executives speaking at the Make it in the Emirates 2026 forum said the regional conflict is reshaping how AI infrastructure is designed. Instead of relying on a single large data hub, companies are increasingly developing distributed AI systems capable of withstanding cyberattacks, supply disruptions and regional instability.

Leandri said the changing security environment had forced companies to rethink centralised AI infrastructure, with distributed systems now viewed as essential for resilience and national security.
