Abu Dhabi Hotels to Launch Facial Recognition Check-In to Streamline Guest Experience

In a bold step toward revolutionizing its hospitality sector, Abu Dhabi has begun rolling out facial recognition technology at hotels to reduce check-in times and enhance security.

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP) and the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) are leading the effort, which is presently being implemented at a few locations.  Five-star hotels in Abu Dhabi City, Al Ain, and the Al Dhafra Region will be the first to use the new system; in the second phase, a wider deployment for four-star institutions is envisaged.

Though authorities have not disclosed a full timeline for implementation across all hotels in the emirate, the facial recognition system is part of a broader strategy to integrate smart technology into the visitor experience.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to leveraging innovation to enhance the guest experience while maintaining the highest standards of safety and security for both guests and hospitality sector employees,” said Saleh Mohamed Al Geziry, Director General for Tourism at DCT Abu Dhabi.

Announced during the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai, the program seeks to streamline the check-in and checkout process by using biometric verification as a form of identification for both hotel guests and employees. The system captures and encrypts facial data during check-in, which is then securely matched with government-held records and transmitted to a central database managed by DCT Abu Dhabi. All data handling complies with the UAE’s stringent cybersecurity and privacy laws.

DCT Abu Dhabi is also offering technical and training support to hotels to ensure a smooth transition to the new system.

The implementation is in line with the UAE’s larger initiative to prioritize digital technology in the future.  Abdulrahman Al Owais, Minister of Health and Prevention and Minister of State for FNC Affairs, stressed the value of biometric technology like facial recognition in updating national identity procedures during a recent Federal National Council meeting.

In other areas, the UAE has already adopted biometric systems.  At Zayed International Airport, Abu Dhabi Airports launched its “biometric smart travel” project in July 2024 with the goal of doing away with paper travel documents by using automated identity verification.  The biometric information of travelers is used by that system, which was created in partnership with ICP, to enable a smooth travel experience.

The adoption of facial recognition in hotels is also part of the emirate’s ambitious Abu Dhabi Tourism Strategy 2030. Announced last year, the plan includes a $10 billion investment in infrastructure to drive international tourism and cultural engagement. The strategy aims to create 178,000 new jobs, nearly doubling employment in the tourism and hospitality sectors to 366,000, and attract 39.3 million annual visitors by the end of the decade.

As Abu Dhabi continues to position itself as a global tourism hub, integrating cutting-edge technology into guest services is set to play a central role in that transformation.
