Strong Consumer Spending Growth

According to recently released data, UAE consumer spending grew significantly in the third quarter of 2024, totaling $3.7 billion in purchases of durable goods, technology, and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG). This represents a 4.8 percent gain from the previous year, demonstrating the UAE market’s tenacity and changing consumer preferences. The results are derived from the most recent NielsenIQ Retail Spend Barometer, which is driven by GfK intelligence and offers quarterly insights into UAE purchasing patterns on technical and FMCG consumer items.

The Spending Increase Is Led by FMCG

With revenues of $2.1 billion in the third quarter, a notable 6.4 percent increase over the same period in 2023, the FMCG industry emerged as the main driver of development. Simultaneously, the durable goods and technology industry provided $1.5 billion, representing a 2.5 percent growth from the previous year.

Growth is Driven by Strong Back-to-School Sales

The success of the quarter was supported by back-to-school promotions, the expansion of convenience retail, and the rising acceptance of online shopping platforms. Demand for online grocery delivery and QuickCommerce services increased, especially among younger, tech-savvy customers.

“We’ve seen sustained growth in the UAE’s retail landscape in the third quarter 2024, with strong consumer spending driven by targeted promotions and increased demand in both FMCG and tech sectors,” said David Cantatore, Retail Lead at NIQ Middle East. He also emphasized how the sector has been revolutionized by the rise of convenience retail and online grocery buying.

FMCG Outpaces Durable Goods and Technology

With year-over-year growth jumping from 3.2 percent in Q3 2023 to 6.4 percent in Q3 2024, the FMCG industry showed a spectacular turnaround. Earlier in the year, FMCG growth slowed from 9.4 percent in Q1 2023 to 3.5 percent in Q1 2024. This increase came after a period of sluggish performance.

On the other hand, the growth rate in the technology and durable goods industry slowed from 7.7 percent in Q3 2023 to 2.5 percent in Q3 2024. Back-to-school sales and the introduction of new products, such the Samsung Galaxy S24, however, kept customers interested.

Growth of Digital and Convenience Retail Platforms

Convenience retail has expanded as a result of the emergence of new residential developments around the United Arab Emirates, which has encouraged smaller but more frequent shopping excursions. This trend is in line with consumers’ growing inclinations for healthier and sustainable products as well as the quick uptake of digital grocery platforms.

“The UAE’s dynamic retail environment and strong consumer confidence are reflected in the positive growth we’re seeing across both sectors,” said David Cantatore. The retail industry is still in a strong position for long-term growth and innovation as we observe how consumer purchasing habits are changing and how digital solutions are becoming more prevalent.

Solutions for Digital Trade and Payments

The growing use of “buy now, pay later” models and sophisticated fintech systems is expected to propel digital trade in the United Arab Emirates to expand at an annual rate of 12.3% between 2023 and 2028. More than 40% of UAE consumers rely on cutting-edge payment methods, according to a joint report from the Ministry of Economy and the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce. This highlights the country’s quick shift to digital commerce.
